Darius Battiwalla

Artist Profile

Leeds City Organist and custodian of the historic town hall organ

Darius Battiwalla has served as the Leeds City Organist since 2017, a role in which he curates the city's long-standing lunchtime recital series and has overseen the major restoration of the Leeds Town Hall organ.

A versatile musician, Darius also holds the position of Music Director for the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus and is a faculty member at the Royal Academy of Music, where he teaches organ improvisation. His career frequently sees him performing as a soloist and orchestral organist with renowned ensembles such as the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic.

Beyond traditional recitals, Battiwalla is highly regarded for his specialist skill in improvising live accompaniments for silent films and for his prolific work as an arranger for groups like the Black Dyke Band. He was educated at the University of Leeds and the Royal Northern College of Music, and his recent projects include a solo recording for the Base2 Music label.

While Leeds Town Hall undergoes refurbishment, he continues to lead the city's organ music programming from Leeds Cathedral.
