Featuring a selection of poems from Martin’s Hythe Poetry Project as well as some of the Hosepipe Band / Newell stage favourites.

Some years ago, Martin Newell was commissioned to cover a number of hoardings at Colchester Hythe Station with poetry and other writings. These still remain on display today. The Hythe port area was the historical 'engine room' of Colchester. It is an ancient if somewhat unsung area of the city, which prompted what Martin now considers some of his best work. All the poems in the show will be accompanied by original music composed and played by the Hosepipe Band.

In addition to being a writer of poetry and songs, Martin Newell is a regular columnist for the East Anglian Daily Times.

Band line-up
Martin Newell -poet
Cara Bruns – keyboard
Simon Haines – accordion, concertina, footbass
Nelson Surfquake – electric guitar, double bass
Val Woollard – flute, bagpipes, hammered dulcimer, saxophone, recorder

Martin Newell has been working with the Hosepipe Band for 10 years. The journey began with performances of Martin’s epic poems Song of the Waterlily, the creation of an Essex smack “from tree to sea” and Black Shuck, the legend of the sinister dog which is said to have haunted the East Anglia countryside since Viking times. There followed The Green Children, the haunting story of oddly-coloured children who appeared out of nowhere in the Suffolk village of Woolpit in the 12th century, and more recently Jigsaw Coast, a collection of poems related to memorable places and events along the coast of East Anglia.
