John Law (“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists”International PianoMagazine, 2014) presents Re-Creations: creative re-workings of some of the world’s most familiar music.
Started in 2016, the idea is simple: we take some of the best-known tunes from all genres - jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes - and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them. Sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back. This is creative jazz which does not exclude audiences; the listeners are an integral part of the whole experience.
The current repertoire, with tunes from the recent album Many Moons (33JAZZ296), includes a deep groove House Of The Rising Sun, a mad version of Mama Mia mashed together with Pachelbel’s Canon, Eye Of The Tiger in 15(!), a raucous version of U Can’tTouch This, an arhythmic take on Smoke on the Water and a beautiful, ever-shifting interpretation of Can’t Help Falling In Love...
“Striking arrangements and great skill and invention in the solos... I can’t remember a better jazz gig! Breathtaking!”
“Only in Re-Creations could Debussy be followed by Deep Purple! One of the best jazz performances I have ever seen"
Never knowingly understood.
